英国肖像画家。自学成才，最早的作品
是细密画，1785—1787年曾在罗马，后
来一直在爱丁堡定居，是该城最好的肖
像画家。他直接在画布上绘画，不用任
何素描起稿，因而作品生动、有力。作
品的人物造型很简洁，但是强烈的阴影
增强了画面的效果。1815年成为皇家美
术学院成员，1823年受封爵士。
